The People

Steven Hickman, Psy.D.,
is a licensed clinical psychologist and an associate clinical professor in the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Department of Family Medicine and Public Health. As executive director of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion (CMSC), Dr. Hickman’s role is to provide oversight, vision, direction and focus for the development and expansion of CMSC around the world. He is also the director of professional training, overseeing the training of teachers from “start to finish” and assuring the highest quality standards and the best possible resources for teaching. Steve is also the Founding Director of the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness, a program of community building, clinical care, professional training and research. He has taught Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for 20 years, and has trained teachers of MBSR, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and MSC. He leads MSC intensives and workshops around the world.

Steve’s teaching style is one of warmth, good humor and a profound commitment to “restoring the inner authority” of those who take his courses and attend his retreats.

Tina Gibson is a skilled and heartfelt Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) teacher. She brings years of experience facilitating MSC and Mindfulness programs and workshops within the Education and Health Care System, Cancer Support and the general community. Prior to this Tina’s qualities of warmth and ease in connection flourished working as a Rehabilitation Counsellor, Health Educator and Emergency Paramedic. Tina is currently the only Certified MSC Teacher Trainer and Mentor in Australia. She is a member of the International Advisory Council for MSC and the Mindfulness Teachers’ Network SA.

A big part of her life is her ongoing weekly community meditation sessions. She has been offering these as well as silent retreat days of practice for over 3 years. Tina believes that while she teaches MSC it remains alive and vibrant in the way it keeps teaching her as she shares MSC far and wide. She is continually learning and growing her understanding of her personal practice. A key to this is her ongoing practice within community and regularly committing time to attend retreats herself. Connection and practice whilst on retreat is an important aspect to deepening her MSC, her self-reflection and humility itself.

Tina brings an authentic sense of warmth, ease and gentleness to the way she lives her life, teaches and leads meditations.
